Fishermen from Ipswich arrived in Rockport in the late 1600s, and by the 1700s, it was a small fishing village. In the 1820s, Rockport became a major granite supplier, leveraging its high-quality stone and ocean access to furnish granite for projects like Boston’s Custom House Tower and the Panama Canal locks. Known briefly as Granitetown, it was incorporated as Rockport in 1840. The granite industry declined with the rise of cement, but remnants of this era remain. By the mid-1800s, artists and writers drawn to its scenic beauty established Rockport as a hub for American art, a legacy reflected in its many renowned galleries today. Over time, Rockport’s picturesque views, charming village setting, and vibrant restaurants also made it a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors seeking a quintessential New England coastal experience.
